I have over two thousand songs and tunes in my head, which range from the 21st century, 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, 20s and all the way back to King Alfred.  I have been known to play for 6 hours without repeating anything, and if I played all of them non-stop, it would take about 100 hours, or every evening for a month!  These include some for every single year from 1890 to 1990, I can offer most as piano, keyboard or organ arrangements, but some depend on me playing other instruments.  A selection is often performed as my “Musical Time Machine” going back and forth in time, such as 50 years of music for a Golden wedding anniversary, or 90 years of music for a 90th birthday.  If you have a month to spare, I can offer 40 pre-Victorian, 100 Victorian, 45 Edwardian, 50 from 1911 to 1919, (including World War I) over 100 each from the Twenties, Thirties, and Forties, over 200 from the Fifties, over 600 from the Sixties, over 200 from the Seventies, plus some more modern ballads and techno-Rock.

Different keys are not usually a major problem to me, (although I am not so keen on B, F#, Db or Ab) but for my own vocals, I follow the typical range where Eb is about as high as I want to go for the top note, in the interests of health and safety.  In 2016, I played and sang for an organ club, and a group of non-musicians in the audience were discussing the fact that I played in what they described as "their key", so they asked me what key it was.  Sadly, life is not that simple, and it is necessary to examine each song in turn, to find out its range of notes.  There used to be a very simple convention among publishers of song sheets, that the singer should not need to go higher than an Eb.  I have found this to be such a good rule, not only for my own singing, and for the majority of men and women I have accompanied over the past half-century, but especially for situations where the audience wants to sing along.  Now, I aim to apply it to everything I play, and when I accompany hymns or Christmas carols, audiences feel obliged to comment that they are surprised to find that they can sing in the keys I play in.  This Christmas, as usual, I attended several carol services where everything was pitched predictably high to suit the sopranos, instead of giving the altos the melody, with the result that large numbers of people were either straining to reach the notes, or singing in their boots, or just shaking their heads and giving up.

Why is this acceptable when the solution is so simple?  People go to carol concerts to sing!

In the following list, “Vocals” are on the right side of the page, and are defined as any tunes I think I can remember the words to.  In many cases, I have only ever been required to use the main part of the song, so if you need the verse as well, this may require prior arrangement.  The articles (A or THE) are not normally used in alphabetical lists, so for example, “The very thought of you” is listed as “Very thought of you”, and “A time for us” is listed as “Time for us (a)”.

Without donations, I will be fine, but our collection may not survive for future generations, and it may all end up on a bonfire.  If every visitor to this site made a small donation, we would have better displays for our building, and much-improved facilities for research within our own archives.  UK cheques must be made out to Bill Kibby-Johnson.  Foreign cheques are subject to high bank charges, so if you are posting a donation, bills are easier to change without any of your money disappearing on charges.
